Waste Management Costs Need Action

Due to the drastic rising costs of solid waste disposal and the collapse of the international recycling markets, Abington’s trash costs require urgent attention in 2025 or serious cuts will need to be made in other services areas.

The Town of Abington is proposing the implementation of a trash user fee which would be phased in over four years, to address the ever-growing and unpredictable cost of curbside trash removal.

2025 Proposal

To address this urgent budget issue, an article will be considered at the April 2025 Town Meeting to transition from taxpayer-funded waste hauling to an annual user fee system, with a phased implementation over four years.

The user fee would be set annually, based on the previous year's tonnage and cost of disposal. Funds would be kept in an Enterprise Fund to only be used for waste services.

Trash Costs

While Abington's trash and recycling tonnage has remained stable over the past few years, waste disposal prices have continued to increase.

From FY18 to FY24 trash costs have increased by more than $500,000, which is a 56% increase.
