Summary

Summer Street (Between Progress and Walnut) Sidewalks

Status

 Summary

Construction of sidewalks from Walnut St. to Progress St. including ADA compliant curbing.

Hancock and Chestnut Street Intersection

Status

Summary

Project will include a roundabout geometric and elevation realignment and improved pedestrian and bike accommodations. Environmental Partners Group was chosen as the engineer. Improvements to this intersection are badly needed as it has been deemed the 3rd most dangerous in town.

Safe Streets for All Planning and Demonstration Grant Award

Status

Summary

The Town was awarded $301,804 to conduct safety-focused corridor studies along two key corridors in the Town, Centre Avenue and Hancock Street, to identify locations for high-impact traffic calming interventions. Abington will also develop a web-based traffic calming toolkit and selection tool.

Washington St./Shaw Ave./Adams St.

Status

 Summary

The intersection at Washington Street, Shaw Ave., and Adams Street has become increasingly more dangerous. DPW have to come up with a solution to reconstruct the intersection.

  • The project would include geographic improvements, ADA compliant sidewalks, and improved pedestrian access.

Randolph Street and Chestnut Street Intersection

Status

Summary

This is the most dangerous intersection in town and the project is scheduled to begin during Federal Year 2027. Greenman-Pederson Inc. was chosen as the engineer and the project will include geometric realignments, a traffic signal and pedestrian, ADA and bike upgrades.

Green Street Playground

Status

 Summary

Green Street Park replacement play structure.

Installation of Interpretive Signs at Island Grove

Status

Summary

Informational signs with descriptive diagrams and narratives communicating the history of Island Grove

Green Wave Connector Trail Design

Status

Summary

The Greenwave Connector Trail would connect Broadmeadow Lane to the Town Library and Town Hall Complex by a walking/bike path. This would be part of a bigger vision to connect the Hanover Rail Trail to Ames Nowell State Park. The walking path would also create a safe and easy way for students in West Abington to access the Middle/High School.

  The contractor has been surveying the wetlands in the trail design area. The project design is 70% complete. The consultant is taking updated designs to the Conservation Commission for review and then the project can be submitted to Conservation for approval

Open Space and Recreation Plan Update

Status

Summary

The Town will work with our regional planning agency (OCPC) to update our Open Space and Recreation Plan.

  • There is a community input meeting scheduled for November 18th.  

  • OSRP Committee and Planning Department are working on the plan and currently focusing on accessibility and open space parcel reviews.

Design for Island Grove Bridge

Status

Summary

The Town will engage a consultant to design the reconstruction/repair of historic Memorial Bridge at Island Grove.

Congressman Lynch secured $1 Million in Federal funding for project.

  • The design is nearly complete and details are being finalized for the final plan which will guide the restoration of the bridge.

Summary

  • To be in compliance of the grant regulations, an environmental review has to take place and that could take up to  two years.

Other infrastructure

Walnut Street Sewer Pump Station

Status

 Summary

The pump stations pumps, motors generator and transfer switch are now over 35 years old and will be replaced as part of the project.

Centre Ave Bridge

Status

Summary

During the most recent State inspection the Centre Ave. bridge was given an overall condition grade of 4 and needs to be rehabilitated

  • When project is in construction phase, road will remain open with one lane of traffic being closed at a time.

Regional Water Plan

Status

Our region faces critical water challenges, such as decreasing well depths, rising demand due to development, water quality issues, and ecological damage. OCPC is leading a joint effort to plan for future water supply while tackling immediate vulnerabilities. The aim is to help ensure affordable, safe, abundant, and ecologically sustainable water now and into the future.

MBTA/3A Communities

Status

Summary

In 2021, Massachusetts adopted the MBTA Community Zoning Law which requires communities served by the MBTA to zone a district for multi-familiy housing near accessible to MBTA stops.

Beaver Brook Playground

 Summary

Beaver Brook playground has undergone a complete tear down and rebuild. The final phase of the project will finalize landscaping, add additional benches, playhouses, and 1-2 more large climbing structures.

Hazard Mitigation Plan Update

Status

Summary

A hazard mitigation plan is a living document that must grow and adapt, keeping pace with a community’s growth and change.  The Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (DMA) places high priority on the continuation of the planning process after the initial submittal, requiring communities to seek and receive re-approval from FEMA to remain eligible for assistance.  The HMP Update process also aims to increase awareness and involvement in hazard mitigation as part of daily activities.
