Town of Abington Announces Separation with Police Chief David Del Papa

Abington, MA, May 7, 2024 | The Town of Abington announces the mutual decision to part ways with Police Chief David Del Papa, effective immediately. This decision arises from differences in the envisioned path for the Abington Police Department between Chief Del Papa and town leadership. Both parties have reached a consensus that it is in the best interest of the Department and the community to amicably proceed in separate directions.

In light of Chief Del Papa's departure, the Town of Abington has initiated the process of

selecting a new Police Chief. We anticipate this process will take between 12 to 16 weeks. As dictated by Section 5-1 of the Town Charter, The Town Manager shall use an assessment process using not less than three police professionals, not employed by the Town of Abington, to evaluate candidates for the position of Chief of Police. The Chief of Police shall be appointed on the basis of qualifications and fitness for service, The Town Manager will thoroughly evaluate candidates to ensure the selection of a capable and visionary leader.

In the interim, after thorough consideration of all available options, both internal and external,

the Town has decided to appoint retired Chief David Majenski as interim Police Chief. Chief

Majenski brings institutional knowledge of the Abington Police Department and the

town as a whole. His leadership will provide stability and guidance during this transitional period

as the Town seeks a permanent successor. It is important to note that Chief Majenski’s role is

temporary. He will not be considered a candidate for permanent appointment. Chief Majenski will serve only for the duration necessary to facilitate a smooth transition to the new leadership.

“We extend our sincere thanks to Chief Del Papa for his contributions and wish him every success in his future endeavors,” shared Town Manager Scott Lambiase. “During his time as Chief, Del Papa brought a wealth of experience and expertise to the Department, navigating through unprecedented circumstances with resilience and determination. His tenure has been marked by dedication and commitment to public safety, for which we express our gratitude.”

Chief Del Papa assumed leadership of the Abington Police Department at a crucial juncture,

amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 Pandemic, the ongoing push for police reform,

and the widespread issue of retention and recruitment within the law enforcement industry.

The Town of Abington remains committed to upholding the highest standards of public safety

and law enforcement excellence. We are confident that, with the support of our community and

dedicated personnel, we will continue to serve and protect the residents of Abington with

integrity and professionalism.
