Overview:
The Abington Department of Public Works (DPW), with the Board of Sewer Commissioners, oversees and maintains the Abington sewer system. Together, they work to keep the Town’s sewer rates below the state average.
The Board of Sewer Commissioners consists of five members elected for terms of three years each. The Board has the general charge of the care and management of the municipal sewer system and its related property.
The Abington sewer infrastructure consists of 90 miles of mains, 1,700 manholes, two flow-metering chambers and 13 pump stations that are maintained at a high level. The Abington DPW office staff handles sewer billing, payments, and all sewer related questions daily.
Residents can go to the DPW webpage to review all sewer information including the yearly sewer rate survey, sewer use regulations and Abington’s licensed drain layers list.
Major projects or goals in 2024
The Department is continuing to line utility holes with inserts to reduce infiltration through utility hole covers, inspect utility holes throughout town, and continue daily inspections for extraneous flows that enter the sewer system.
Our 36-year-old Walnut Street pump station is also being upgraded in 2024. The station’s pumps, motors, generator and transfer switch are all being replaced as part of the project.

Can I discharge my sump pump into sewer system?
Discharging of sump pumps into the sewer system is PROHIBITED and strictly enforced. If your sump pump is connected to your sewer line or you are unsure about it, please feel free to contact our office and we would be more than happy to schedule an appointment to come out and take a look at it and to help correct it if necessary. Removing these sump pumps from the sewer system only benefits rate payers in the long run as our rates are based on our flow to the City of Brockton. Sump pumps discharging into the sewer system only causes our flow to be higher.
