The Town of Abington is pleased to announce the appointment of John Bonney as Abington’s new Police Chief. Bonney, currently a Lieutenant with the Stoughton Police Department, brings leadership experience, innovation, and a strong commitment to community policing.
Over the past 21 years, Chief Bonney has risen through the ranks of the Stoughton Police Department by building effective relationships with his fellow officers, community leaders, and residents.
Chief Bonney’s decorated police career is marked by his leadership in various operational roles. With increasing responsibility and rank, Chief Bonney's leadership roles include overseeing critical investigations, serving as Stoughton’s Public Information Officer, and implementing internal department training initiatives.
“We are excited to welcome Chief Bonney to Abington,” said Scott Lambiase, Abington’s Town Manager. “Chief Bonney’s extensive experience in building strong internal and external relationships, combined with his community policing approach aligns with Abington’s vision for our Police Department.”
Chief Bonney holds a master’s degree in criminal justice from Western New England University and a bachelor’s degree in communication from Framingham State College. Dedicated to developing strong leadership skills, he has many accreditations and certifications from the Massachusetts Police Institute of Executive Development and the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (LEEDA). Most notably, Chief Bonney received the prestigious FBI LEEDA Trilogy Award recognizing his completion of its intensive leadership program.
“It is my honor to be selected as Abington’s new Police Chief,” said Chief Bonney. “I look forward to working closely with all of Abington’s officers and public safety officials to ensure a safe and healthy community for all of the Town’s residents.”
Chief Bonney’s appointment follows a comprehensive search process led by Public Safety LLC, a consulting company owned by two retired New England police chiefs. Public Safety LLC provides services to Massachusetts municipalities such as Executive Searches, Promotional and Entry Level Examinations, and Assessments of Candidates. The search resulted in a strong pool of candidates who underwent an intensive assessment process. The new Chief was selected by Town Manager Lambiase and ratified by the Board of Selectmen for his proven leadership skills and his commitment to community engagement.
“On behalf of the Board of Selectmen, I would like to thank Retired Chief Majenski for serving as interim Police Chief since May,” said Kevin Donovan, Board of Selectmen Chairman. Chief Majenski will assist in the transition period and stay with the Department through the month of September.
Chief Bonney will officially begin his role on September 9. An official badge pinning will be hosted at the Senior Center on September 10, the exact time will be announced in the coming weeks. The community is encouraged to attend and meet our new Police Chief.
